winword\winword.opt ???

Win 98 SE with Office Pro 4.3 ('Windows compatible', 'Mfg'd for Gateway
2000').
Use Winword often to copy>paste then edit (reverse the thread, change
margins, delete those pesky indents) and print newsgroup posts for future
reference. Ocassionally save the docs but usually not. All is well if I
rename DOC.1 and save but if after closing and NOT 'Save changes to DOC.1?'
I get a strange new message: "Word cannot write to file
C:\MSOFFICE\WINWORD\WINWORD.OPT". Can click 'OK' to finish closing. Don't
know where that came from or what to make of it. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks. Keith

Hi Keith,

Winword.opt is used for saving user preferences such as those found
under Tools/Options and your MRU list.

It could be the file is corrupt. Try exiting Word, locating
Winword.opt and renaming it. Word will create a new one upon starting
using the defaults.

If you still encounter the error and are not using Word 6.0c
(Help/About) then it's possible you are encountering an error
corrected by a later version. Of course the updates are no longer
available since it was discontinued a few years ago.

But other than an annoyance, and the possibility your preferences are
not being retained, it doesn't sound like it is causing any damage.

Bingo. Renamed it winword.optout. Sounded like a natural choice. Have tried
my copy>paste>exit sequence a few times - no problem or error message. Thank
you very much, Beth. Keith.
