Winword won't open

I'm having quite a strange problem with winword.exe. I
can open it if I go to start -> new office document. If I
try to open a file by double clicking it doesn't work. If
I try to open using winword.exe it doesn't work.
Basically it loads into processes showing mem usage of 72k
and takes 100% cpu usage. I have tried reinstalling
office 2000 with all current updates to no prevail. I
also am unable to launch the program using the
winword.exe /a command. Thanks in advance.

I have gone through that article many times and have tried
everything except for the Norton plugin. The reason is,
we are running Symantec Client Security and it doesn't
seem to have the same structure as NAV so I am unable to
figure out how to disable the office plugin. This problem
is strange because once I open word using the new office
document, I can close that and later open word with no
problem from any icon as long as I don't reboot. Once I
reboot I must first open word with the new office
documents for it to work. Any help would be much
appreciated.

Try searching for a file named OFFICEAV.DLL on the hard drive (include
hidden and system files and folders). This is the .dll for the NAV
Office Plugin. If you find it, note the folder where it is located, and
use the "regsvr32 /u" method described in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office programs
with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" to unregister it.

Sorry, you lost me on the detect & repair. What is that
and how do I do it? And thank you for all the help.

Well, I'm not sure that running Detect & Repair would help anyway,
because I still think it's an issue with Norton Antivirus. But if you
want to try it, close all open applications, then click on Start |
Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Microsoft Office | Change | Repair.
