Wish to have TOC in different Page Format than Document

Good day;

I'm new to this group, so please advise if I'm missing any relevant
detail to my question.

I'm writing a thesis and my page numbers must be in Roman Numerals,
but the Table of Contents should be in regular numbering.

1) I have all page numbers identified correctly
2) I have a table of contents created, but of course it is showing all
pages in roman format.
3) This is all done in Word 2002

Is it possible to avoid this issue, and to show page numbering as
regular, despite the Roman throughout the document?

Many thanks in advance;
Lindsay

You probably can't have different numbering styles in the ToC and the
book (if you did, the ToC wouldn't be an accurate guide to the book!).
but are you _sure_ you're supposed to number a, say, 350-page ms. with
i, ii, iii, ... cccxlviii, ccxlix, ccl ? That seems _very_ unlikely.
Much more usual would be numbering the front matter (ToC,
acknowledgments, etc.) in roman and the body of the book in arabic
numerals. (You do this with a Section Break and Page Number Format,
and the ToC will show correctly.)

Oh gosh, you're absolutely right. I just checked the guidelines and
just the first part is to be in Roman numerals. I found it to be an
awfully inconvenient format myself! :p

Seems the anxiety of getting this thing done is getting to me. Thank
you for your help and patience!

I saw you're in Newfoundland and was ready to email my friend in
Toronto to find out if Canadian universities demand weird things of
their students ...
