Without using CNTL, I type 'e and get é. How do I stop it?

Without using CNTL, I type:
'e and get é
'a and get á
"a and get ä
etc...

The only way I can get ' or ", is to type ' or " then (space). How do I
stop this? It is even happening as I type this message online.

Go to Regional and Language Options from the Control Panel, click on the
Languages tab, then click Details and be sure your keyboard is set to US. You
can remove others if you don't want them.

Actually, you were close, but I'd already made sure my language was English
(Australia). The problem was solved by clearing the box beside
"Automatically detect languages" in the same Languages tab.
