.wll files in starup cause boot delay in Word 2003 with message "running virus scan"

Greetings: Thought I'd post in the general thread to see if someone had
a solution to a pesky problem. I'm running endnote 7 with Word 2003.
Thing is, endnote has a couple of .wll files it likes to put in Word
2003's startup folder. These files are causing a pretty serious and
annoying boot delay in which the message "running virus scan..."
appears. Now, before you go cleverly writing about disabling NAV's
office plugin, please finish reading. This occurs with NAV uninstalled
from the machine. No virus checker folks!! I know the .wll files are
causing this delay because if you move em out of startup the delay
ceases and desists. I have a .wll file from another program and it too
causes this pesky delay. Is Word 2003 doing the virus scan? If not,
what is!? Others have reported the same errors. Suggestions?

There is no antivirus software in Word, and the virus scan message comes
from your AV software, so maybe you didn't uninstall it as well as you
thought.

Norton has forgotten to update its Verisign certificate which ran out on the
7th January.
Norton has posted a silly suggested fix at
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl
It could be that Verisign is the problem here too - and the above fix,
though not ideal, should work for you.

If you uninstalled Norton then the DLL for the Office Plug-in may
still be registered.

Search for officeav.dll and if found go to Start/Run and run the
following command:

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"

In the above example the path for "Officeav.dll" would depend on the
location of the DLL.

Thanx, I've got the problem after a clean install of both w2k and Word
2003. Nothing to do with NAV. It's a pesky internal virus scanner
that's evidently part of Word 2003. It would be aweful nice if their
was a shut off option or if someone knows of a reg hack to shut this
garbage off. Anyhow, thanx for the suggestions. Regards,

Hi Steven,

Word 2003 doesn't have an internal virus scanner. MS provided for
macro virus scanning in the application but it's up to your Antivirus
software to utilize it.

Take a look under Tools/Macro/Security if you see "Virus scanner(s)
installed" then this is an indication of a third-party virus scanner.

I noted you mentioned a few times that you do not use Norton but what
virus scanner do you use?

Hi Thanx for the reply Beth. I have NOD32 installed as a virus
scanner. However, last week I was able to reproduce this problem with
a clean install of w2k and a fresh install of Word 2003. No virus
scanner installed then. Also, uninstalling the virus scanner has no
effect on the problem. Putting the .wll files into Word's startup
folder yields the long delay with the message "running virus scan"
virus scanner installed or not. If Word isn't running the scan then
what is? Nothing else was installed on the machine, except Endnote 7
and it certainly doesn't have a virus scanner on board. So, if Word
isn't scanning the file what is? We've got the choice of w2k, or Word
2003? Nothing else is installed. My inclination is to think Word is
running a check on that file. Also, I've checked the macro security
settings and it doesn't show anything about virus scanners installed.
Incidently, fiddling with the settings in the security window has no
effect. Could this be a Word bug then? If it's not supposed to be
running a virus scan and it appears to be doing something it says is a
virus scan without any virus software installed then I think this
suggests Word might be buggy in this regard. Are you able to reproduce
the problem there? I'm happy to send you a .wll file if you don't have
one. The problem will occur with any .wll file I believe. Regards,

Beth: One other observation. Once Word has been booted if I start
another occurence of Word I don't get the virus scan message. I'm not
sure if this is a clue to anything.

Go ahead and zip up the *.wll and I'll see if I can duplicate it here.
Remove "NoSpam4Me" to obtain a vaild email address.
