Re: Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003.
Currently installed:
1.Microsoft Tools
2.Microsoft Office Word 2003
and
3.Microsoft Office Excel 2003.

I've got a Microsoft Office Suite 2007 CD but never installed it because the
spellchecker in Outlook Express6 worked only in the French language.

I just downloaded Windows Live Mail and like it a lot.

Is Windows Live Mail working in harmony with Microsoft Office Suite 2007 and
is the spellchecker working in the English language?

If so, what is the best way to uninstall Microsoft Office Professional
Edition 2003 (Size 171.00MB) ?
There is *no* 'Remove' button on Add or Remove Programs panel.

I also noticed that some (Office 2003) updates *can not* be removed from the
Add or Remove Programs panel. Please advise as how to handle these
particular updates.
Should I uninstall the (Office 2003) updates which *can* be removed?

Will my existing Microsoft Excel 2003 spreadsheets convert automatically to
Microsoft Excel 2007 spreadsheets?

Do I have to install Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system together
with Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 1 (SP!)?

Will the system automatically search for pertinent security updates?

Can I expect any problems (known issues)?
Or, would it be safer to leave 2003 installed and forget about the 2007
Edition?

TIA.

This response deals with the Windows Live Mail aspect only.

Windows Live Mail includes its own spellcheck files so unlike Outlook
Express, it does not require Microsoft Office programs for spellcheck
capability. The installation of Office 2007 should not interfere with
WL Mail in any way.

However, English (US) is the default English spellchecker in WLMail. If
you prefer a different spellcheck version (UK, Canadian, Australian,
etc.), please return to this newsgroup for further instructions.

I understand the fix for that is to simply reinstall the Office 2003

Yes, separate programs, separate spell checker and dictionaries. OL, if installed, will by design become the default email client
and attempt to do so, if changed from default, when OL updates are installed.
If so, what is the best way to uninstall Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 (Size 171.00MB) ?
There is *no* 'Remove' button on Add or Remove Programs panel.
- Insert the Cd may work, or an item on the Start\Programs menu may be available
- Was this an OEM installed version ? Office 2003 retail by design when installed on W2K/XP provides an uninstall option via
Add-Remove.
I also noticed that some (Office 2003) updates *can not* be removed from the Add or Remove Programs panel. Please advise as how

Should I uninstall the (Office 2003) updates which *can* be removed?
Either way is fine...since the updates modify Office files, those files will be removed once office is removed. IIRC, and as a a
last resort, there is an Office 2003 removal tool in the Office 2003 Resource Kit
Will my existing Microsoft Excel 2003 spreadsheets convert automatically to Microsoft Excel 2007 spreadsheets?
Excel 2007 has the ability to open, read, edit, save Excel 2003 spreadsheet(xls) files.
Excel 2007 by default saves files to its new extension and file format(*.xlsx).
One can change the default(Office Button/Excel Options/Save)to use the 03 format as default.

Do I have to install Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system together with Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack
1 (SP!)?
If Office 2007 is installed, then neither..only install the security updates for Compatibility Pack provided by Microsoft Update
- why...the CP and CPsp1 are intended for installation on Office 2K, XP, Office 2003 and 2003 Viewers(Excel, Word, etc)to allow
these earlier versions to open/edit and save 2007 file formats.
Will the system automatically search for pertinent security updates?
As long as Windows Update(WU) is configured properly. If your question is about Office updates, then WU has to be configured(In XP
to use MU instead or WU; in Vista MU is an option in the WU config panel). Alternately instead of MU, one can use the Office
Update on the Office Online Web site
Can I expect any problems (known issues)?
Or, would it be safer to leave 2003 installed and forget about the 2007 Edition?
Both function. 2007's has additonal features, a entirely different GUI, ..thus 2003 wrote skills will require some patience.

However in the future it should be upgraded to cover all words in the OED

No, it's not am OEM installed version. I now suspect the Remove button is

If you install only the proofing tools from Office XP or Office 2003 you
can't validate the installation. This results in the inability to download
anything from Microsoft since it won't pass the Genuine Advantage test. You
need to install something else that will trigger activation. However it
doesn't make sense to install something if you don't need it. :)

If you install proofing tools from Office 2000 then you'll encounter a
conflict with SmartTags.

I didn't test the proofing tools from previous versions so they may work but
I suspect they'll have issues too.

Currently, Microsoft's recommendation is to install proofing tools from a
third party. Here's their KB article on this issue:

That may be so. However, you can use standard Microsoft proofing files
for various languages in Windows Live Mail, (including many variations
of the English language), without installing Microsoft Office in its
latest or any previous incarnation. There is no need to install third
party spellcheck software.

Windows Live Mail has its own built-in spellcheck files, which are
totally independent of the Microsoft Office suite (or installed
components from Microsoft Office). It follows that you don't need to
physically install proofing tools from Office 2000, Office XP or Office
2003 to use any of the standard spellcheckers in Windows Live Mail. In
that respect, WLMail is completely different from Outlook Express.

The default spellchecker is English (United States) - but you can add
Korean, French, German and/or Spanish from a short list of other
languages. Furthermore, it is not difficult to chnage the English
spellchecker from English (United States) to English (United Kingdom) or
English (Canada).

Office 2007 does not interfere with spellchecking in WLMail. - and there
for English, French, German and Spanish, there is no need to attempt a
separate or partial installation of proofing tools from Office 2000 or
Office 2003. For languages that are not included as standard options in
WLMail (such as Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, etc.), Windows Live Mail can
use local LEX and DLL files from Office 2000 or 2003.

For any additional language, merely copy the files from an Office 2000
or 2003 installation disk (or from an installation of Office 2000 or
2003 on the same, or another computer) - to the appropriate location in
WLMail (see below) and edit the spell.ini file in that folder.

You must create a separate folder for each language and for non-English
languages, you would need to identify the decimal and hexadecimal IDs
for each country. For further information, see
http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!F92775FC46A390CA!223.entry
(which deals with different variations of the English spellchecker).

I've only aware of conflicts with installing only the 03proofing tools on an XP/Off2K7 sytem are updates that may be deployed via

As far as the later GVA issues with Off2K7 or Windows XP maybe Beth can clarify.

So the presence of only the 03 Proofing Tools on an XP/Office 2007 system causes Windows and Office 2007 to fail even if

This is becoming unnecessarily complicated.

Outlook Express did not have its own spellchecker, and depended upon the
spellchecker in Microsoft Office 2003 (or earlier). An installation of
Office 2007 "breaks" the spellchecker in Outlook Express.

Windows Live Mail has its own, dedicated spellchecker, which does not
depend upon the spellchecker in any version of Microsoft Office.
Consequently, a new installation of Office 2007 (or an upgrade from
Office 2003) has no effect upon WL Mail.

I accept that you would probably suffer conflicts, if you tried to
install elements from Office 2003 and 2007 simultaneously on one
computer. However, the presence of WLMail has no bearing whatsoever
upon the decision whether to install Office 2007, in preference to
Office 2003.

Furthermore, I would be most surprised, if Microsoft Office conflicted
with WLMail (or vice versa), because Microsoft Office XP, 2000, 2003 or
2007 are entirely different programs from Windows Live Mail - and I see
no reason why anyone might want to install both versions simultaneously.

By way of additional information, the built-in spellchecker in WL Mail
is available in a fairly short list of languages. If the OP wanted to
add more languages, he could "import" or "copy" the relevant LEX and DLL
files from Microsoft Office 2003 (or earlier). However, COPYING two
files is an entirely different concept from attempting to INSTALL the
proofing tools from Office 2003 (or earlier).

There is no need to install Office 2003 (or earlier) - merely copy the
relevant LEX and DLL spell-check files to the "C:\Documents and
Settings\[User Name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
Live Mail\Proof\prf0xxx\1" folder (where "0xxx" in "prf0xxx" is a
variable that defines the language).

So the presence of only the 03 Proofing Tools on an XP/Office 2007
system causes Windows and Office 2007 to fail even if downloading the
updates manually from the Msft Download site even with Office using a
separate Active X GVA add-on.

Thanks...time to run a test on an XPSp3 system :)

How about e. Office 2007 and Windows will fail the Genuine Advantage
test and you're unable to download anything that requires you to pass
the test. :)

If the OP wants to keep OE and install the Proofing Tools from Office
2003 then they'd need to install more than just the Proofing Tools in
order to trigger activation.

Beth,
If the op decides to return to OE(instead of the current choice to
use WLM) and install Office 2007(with OL) and also the proofing
tools from Office 2003, does this mean:
a. Office 2007 will fail validation
b. Office 2003 will fail validation
c. both Office 2003 and 2007 fail validation
d. Windows XPSp3 also fails validation

If only (b), what would the person need to download from Microsoft.

If you install only the proofing tools from Office XP or Office
2003 you can't validate the installation. This results in the
inability to download anything from Microsoft since it won't pass
the Genuine Advantage test. You need to install something else that
will trigger activation. However it doesn't make sense to install
something if you don't need it. :)

If you install proofing tools from Office 2000 then you'll
encounter a conflict with SmartTags.

I didn't test the proofing tools from previous versions so they may
work but I suspect they'll have issues too.

Currently, Microsoft's recommendation is to install proofing tools
from a third party. Here's their KB article on this issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932974
I understand the fix for that is to simply reinstall the Office
2003
Proofing tools, after installing Office 2007.

I've got a Microsoft Office Suite 2007 CD but never installed it
because the
spellchecker in Outlook Express6 worked only in the French
language.
