WMV does not play in PPT

am trying to insert a WMV in powerpoint.

Here's what I have:
1) Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, SP2
2) Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 SP1
3) Windows Media Player 10
4) Microsoft Media Player 5.1
5) a WMV file, 39Mb, 8 character filename in same directory as PPT
6) a PPT file
7) Dell Latitude D610, pentium M, 2Ghz, 1Gb RAM

Here's what I've tried:

1) Verified that .wmv file will play in Windows Media Player 10
2) Verified that .wmv file will play Microsoft media Player 5.1
3) Inserted .wmv into PPT through "Insert > Movies & Sounds > Movie
from file"
4) Get a black box inserted.
5) went to slideshow view, clicked movie.

results:
-- movie goes to white (this doesn't happen when played in WMP10).

Thoughts?

"a WMV file, 39Mb, 8 character filename in same directory as PPT"

Same folder as powerpoint itself or same as the presentation file? Try
creating a folder on the C Drive and put the presentation and the video in it
then re insert.

Powerpoint videos dont get played in windows Media Player it uses
mplay32.exe try opening that from start > run and see if it plays it.

Do you have any other players / editors installed (quicktime / real player
etc)?

A: The .wmv file is in the same directory as the .ppt presentation
file.
A: I've moved the .wmv file and the .ppt presentation file to a new
directory at C:/test/ and re-inserted the WMV file. I get the same
results -- in slideshow mode, I click to play, and the video goes all
white.
A: I successfully ran the movie in Microsoft Media Player
(mplay32.exe).
A: I have QT and Real Player installed as well.

Then I suspect you have installed a media application that has changed your
system settings. Usually the easiest "fix" is to download and reinstall
Windows Media Player.
