we've noticed that powerpoint's media player does not like
microsofts's .wmv media files very much at all.
does anybody know how to overcome this problem ? (without
re-creating the files as .mpg that is)

It's a very complex question, so you'll need to tell us a lot more about the
problem before we can offer any help.

Start with:
1. Version of PowerPoint
2. Version of Windows Media Player
3. Version of DirectX
4. Source of the WMV file. Did you create it, and if so, in what software?
5. What happens when you insert the file in a presentation?
6. What happens when you play the presentation?
7. If the presentation plays differently on different systems, the above
questions also need to be answered about those systems.
