wont accept text

Excel version 2002

I am keep typing ACN (a stock symbol but pure text) into a cell and it
displays CAN.
This happens anywhere on the page and even if I type ACN into a comment thne
CAN appears
I keep clearing and reformatting the cell to no avail
This also occurs if I open a new file and type ACN anywhere in it.

This is the strangest thing I have ever seen .

look into the Options => Proofing => Auto-Correct-Options if there is a
rule that changes ACN to CAN

WOW - good on you Claus - a bit of a different path than you showed me
but got me thinking - I found it under Tools >

Auto Correct Options - it was listed there for some unknown reason to
always change ACN to CAN. I deleted it.

I didn't even know this stuff existed in the program.

Well done !!
