Do you get any error messages when you install the fax program?
You never answered my question about your modem.

That's not how you install the fax service.
You install fax from Control Panel > Add/Remove Software.

List the steps you are using and what happens.
Verify you have an analog fax modem on the Windows XP HCL list.

goes thought the install and I see the phone icon appear in the
folder,
and then it disappears and no fax machine!

Any idea's?

Please try to keep the conversation in one thread.
I'll permit you to check for yourself as to whether it is on the Windows XP
HCL list.
I'm having rather a busy day here.
I would suggest you take a look at your faxsetup.log, too.
