Won't Open Files Right...

I have Office 2003 on XP. Just reported to me today by user, they "can't
open Word documents". When I take a look, I find that if I start Word and,
inside the app, open a document, I have no trouble. BUT, when I just try to
click on a document on the desktop, it refuses to work. It gives me an error
that it can't find the referenced file. But this happens with any Word doc I
try and those same docs work if I try it from within Word. Thanks for any
tips you can give!

Try reregistering Word. From Start, Run, type in

winword /r

and press enter. Does that resolve the problem? If not, try running Detect
and Repair.

This did not resolve the issue. I'm now getting a different issue instead.

Is this now a different error whilst you are editing a document you have
opened or is this happening in addition to the desktop opening problem?

If it is both, then I suspect a bad third party add-in. Try disabling all
add-ins and testing. See how to find add-ins
