Word '03 dialogues, messages & crash

MAMBO_MAN

When I click on the Word 2003 program icon, I get a dialog box with
the following messages

"Preparing to install
Then
"Please wait while windows configures Office XP Standard edition 2003

If I cancel this operation, Word then opens & closes normally

Normal.dot is present before & after this process in the documents
& settings\applications\microsoft\templates folder

In word itself, clicking tools\templates & add-ins dialog box,
where it says ""Global templates & add-ins"
clicking on the "add" button reveals in the "add templates" box
the presence of BOTH Normal.dot and ~$normal.dot templates.
Same thing is revealed when I click on the "Attach" button in the
"Document Template" section

However, when I look via explorer in the documents & settingsapplications\microsoft\templates folder, Normal.dot is the ONLY
template present (NOT also ~$normal.dot

If I let this operation continue (not canceling it & opening word),
like many times before, after the dialog message "gathering requir
ed information" completes, the "Please Wait..." dialog again appears,
and about 10 seconds later I get a blue screen crash with the message
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA
STOP OX....50

And begins "dump of Physical memory.

I believe these are the same messages that would appear if one tried
to remove/repair Word in either the "add/remove" part of the control
panel, or in word itself (Help\Detect & Repair

I have disabled the Norton anti-virus word plug-in and Norton virus
scan revealed no virus in the word program files

Any ideas as to what is going on

Will I need to do a complete, clean format & re-install of Both WinXP
& Office XP
(I cannot remove Office XP via t he control panel--get the above
mentioned blue screen cras

Thank

I'm getting close to the same problem...My Word opens
correctly, but when I try to open a file I get an error
that the file cannot be loaded...then when I close Word I
get the Normal.dot file has been changed and do I want to
replece it..

If I say yes, Word closes...however Word will not load
any files previously created...I'm using a Toshiba Tablet
PC M205-S809 running Office XP Tablet.

I've tried removing/uninstalling Office twice and then
reinstalling and get the same error in Word. All other
Office products seem to be working fine...

If you find any answers, please let me know.

Oh, also, I've restored to a time when Word was working
correctly and then reinstalled Word, again with no
luck!!!!

If you're running Norton Antivirus, disable the Office Plugin that comes
with it.

Thanks for your response
In my original post, however, I already stated that I disabled the Norton Plug-in
I already had tried to delete just the Word Data key in the registry, leaving th
Normal.Dot file intact, and still got a blue screen crash immediately on startu
of wor
I also previously had looked in the Word Startup folder (nothing there), defragge
my HD & used chkdisk, all to no avail
Any other suggestions I might have missed
Look to me like I have to (groan) re-install both Win XP & Office XP

Thanks again.

Hi Mambo_Man. Sorry, I was replying to "Duane", who was using your post
in part to describe his "file not available" problem (what I said did
apparently work for him). I didn't realize you hadn't resolved your
problem, so I didn't read through your entire post. Now that I have
read your post, I see that you are reporting a different issue than what
"Duane" posted, but I don't know the answer to your question. Hopefully
someone else in this group does.
