Word '03 - Macro Problem!

PumaMan

I have a letter template that uses a Macro to update fields on the Letter to
capture the associate's signature from "Field - UserName" so each associate
does not have to enter their Name each and every time.

- The issue is that we then have to print these letters (which can be
hundreds), Word prompts at the start of each and every letter if we want to
Enable or Disable Macros. Is there any way we can disable the dialog that
asks if we want to Disable/Enable macros? I'd like to make it default to
enable macros, despite the recommendation not to do so. This way, we can
mass print each doc one after the other without having to respond to each
letter.

Thanks!!!

If the macro is stored in the template -- and it really is a template
(*.dot) and not a document (*.doc) -- and the template is stored in the
Templates folder listed in the Tools > Options > File Locations dialog, then
you should not be getting any Disable/Enable prompts.

If all of those conditions are true, then what is the setting of the
security level in Tools > Macro > Security? Medium should be sufficient, but
even High should accept macros in a template in a "trusted location", which
the Templates folder is.

Hi Jay,

No the Macro is not in a template. I could easily do that, but the
templates folder is on the user's C drive, and we keep the letters on a
shared network drive.

I truly appreciate you helping me understand how this works better! Is there
any way I can store a .dot or .doc on a shared drive without the macros
prompts?

Thanks!!!

Sorry to say, there isn't really a good way to do this.

One way is to get a digital certificate and sign the macro project in the
documents. At least, I think that will work, but I haven't tried it. One
drawback is that unless your company has a certificate server, the cert is going
to cost money from a supplier such as VeriSign or Thawte.

Office 2007 is the first version that allows you to assign an arbitrary folder
as a trusted location. Again, I haven't tried trusting a folder on a network
drive, to see if a macro-containing template in that location avoids the prompt.
If that works, you can move the macros to the template and keep it on the
network drive. A drawback to this is that if anyone has the template in use, you
won't be able to edit it to make changes -- you have to kick everybody out
first.

The remaining option is to distribute a copy of the template to each user's
local drive during network login. See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/DistributeMacros.htm.

Hi Jay,

Just wanted to update you. i was able to change the User Templates trusted
folder to the folder on our network drive and it worked!

Thanks again for your help!

That could be a problem. You see, Word expects to find its Normal.dotm
template in the User Templates folder. But Normal.dotm is definitely NOT for
shared use -- every user should have their own, or else bad things start
happening (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811468).

You should be able to set some network shared folder to be trusted, but not
be the User Templates folder.
