Word 08 crash on quit clue

J

Jonathan Duke

First off, I'd like to the thank all of the MVPs for their help. And a
big thank you to Curt Laird for being the public face of MS on this.

I spent a lot of time troubleshooting a single machine at a client site
with a crash on quit. G4 iMac, 10.5.1, Office 01, 04, & 08 installed.

Tried all of the various remedies posted (Disk Util, removing Normal
templates & pref files, etc.). Even trashed the Office 2001 folder.

When we setup Word 2008, we had set an existing folder for holding the
Autorecovery files (Preferences-File Locations-AutoRecovery files).
This folder was used for both Word 2004 & 2008. It contained a
AutoRecovery version of the Word 2004 Normal template along with other
versions dating back to July 2007. Clearing out the contents of this
folder seems to have resolved the crash on quit. I believe that the
problem was caused by the Normal template there, but it could have been
any of the files.

Just add this place to your cleanup routine and see if that fixes things
on your system.

Cheers,
Jon

Thanks Jon.

We also appreciate your effort, the efforts of the MVPs, and other Good
Samaritans out there in helping us to troubleshoot issues such as this one.

This info should come in handy to help get some people get up and running.

Hi Jonathan:

Thanks for your kind words. We're kinda under the pump right now, so a
little encouragement makes it all worth it!

Since your roll-out project is only running a week late now, you have plenty
of time to write this one up for Daiya's website, right?? :)

Daiya's the webmaster for http://word.mvps.org/Mac/WordMacHome.html

Best cheers

Final solution for crash of Word 2008 Mac with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2

First of all, can you verify to you have deleted the old Office installations and its preferences.

The problem is caused from errors of Leopard privileges
and/or
some problems with the package of the Grammar correction (into "Microsoft Office 2008/Office/Shared Applications/ProofingTools/").

You can remove, quickly and easyly, the ‘ItalianGrammar.proofingtool’ package into "Microsoft Office 2008/Office/Shared Applications/ProofingTools/". Word 2008 do not crashes anymore and it works well but you misses the Grammar correction...

Description
Immediately after installation, the privileges of "Office 2008 folder and files", visibles with the Finder Inspector (Command+I), are: _unknown (for the User) and admin (for the Group). Only two files, however, have privileges root:admin (see below).

BUT if you examine the Folder with the Terminal, you see that the original installation of Office 2008 assigns to the folder and files, exactly, 503 for the User and admin for the Group.

Therefore, you can write sudo chown -vR _unknown:admin /NAME_OF_FOLDER/ but, INSTEAD, you have to write: sudo chown -vR 503:admin /NAME_OF_FOLDER/

Ultimate solution
The final answer for Microsoft Office 2008 Italian (in this example):
1) Into Terminal (from the /Applications/Utilities folder), write:
sudo chown -vR 503:admin /Applications/Microsoft\ Office\ 2008/
press Enter
2) Terminal ask you the admin password.
Write the admin password (note that Terminal do not show the password key) and press Enter.

3) Now copy and paste into Terminal:
sudo chown -vR root:admin /Applications/Microsoft\ Office\ 2008\Office\OfficePID.plist /Applications/Microsoft\ Office\ 2008\Office\SetupInfo.plist
and press the Enter key.

Always into Terminal write, exactly (or copy and paste):
rm -vfR ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.*
and press Enter
and write (or copy and paste)
rm -vfR ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
and press Enter

NOW ATTENTION! This is the great secrets!!!!
You must DELETE also the file of GRAMMAR corrections, into YourHome/Library/Preferences.

So, then write:
rm -vfR ~/Library/Preferences/*.grammar.profiles
and press the Enter key.

Note that the * indicates the NAME_OF_YOUR_LANGUAGE.

If you know the exact name of the Grammar preferences, you can write also, for example in Office Italian version:
rm -vfR ~/Library/Preferences/italian.grammar.profiles

Note for Italian users:
you have the ~ symbol (=Tilde) pressing, at the same time, the ALT/OPTION key + 5% key (the 5 at top of your keyboard and not the 5 key at right!!!)

Thanks Enzio:

That's very valuable :)

Everyone: obviously you need to follow Enzio's advice absolutely exactly.

Terminal is a "power tool". 50 years ago, my Woodwork instructor told me
"Power tools are a tremendous invention in the hands of people who know what
they are doing. In the hands of the inexperienced, they can simply result
in making a larger mistake, faster."

I have never forgotten his words.

And I have proved him correct many, many times :)

Cheers
