word 12.2.3

MacPro, 10.5.8: Out of the blue, today Word started crashing every time I tried to save changes to a document, and without even saving a backup. I restarted everything--no good; I ran utilities and did permission repairs--no good; I installed the 12.2.4 update, and on new documents, everything is fine. But if I open a document from earlier today, or any previous document, and try to save a change, it completely crashes without saving a back up. Idon't recall this ever happening before. Any ideas on this soggy holiday weekend?
