Word 1997-2000 --virus problem

Hi word community,
I think I've picked up a virus of some kind. I think it started July 21,
2003 after a certain e-mail from a friend. There were links on that message
that when I opened them were strange. There appeared on the crt part of a
letter taking up half the screen. After that I had the following problem:
When I try to open a word document from a diskette
(the A drive), all I get is that hour glass icon and the file never opens
and I can't get out of it. I have to re-boot in order to get out of the
problem. I have windows ME.
Can anyone out there help.

Are you sure the A drive isnt dead or dying? If the
problem isnt the drive itself try running a virus scan
with updated files, if you dont have one get one ASAP but
for now try www.pcpitstop.com they have an online virus
scanner which should be up to date.
