Word 200 problem...

I'm having a problem with Word 2000--everytime i try to
open it, it shows an error message saying, "Microsoft
Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to
close..." I have tried just about everything to fix it
but nothing is working. One thing i was told to try is
change Normal.dot to Normal.old. How do I do this? Are
there any other suggestions I could try??
Thanks a bunch!

Hi,

I'm having same probs (though nothing said about
Normal.dot - search for the file then rename!).

I have renamed Winword.exe and mso9.dll (as per KB
article 302602) to Winword.old and mso9.old, then
repaired Office 2000 without success.

I have also followed details which Suzanne S. Barnhill
posts for
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.h
tm
Again, without any luck.

Details contained in the error message are:
AppName: winword.exe
AppVer: 9.0.0.6926
ModName: mso9.dll
ModVer: 9.0.0.6926
Offset: 0081ed2

PC spec: P4 2GHz , XP v2002 SR1, 512MB RAM, 40GB HD,
NVIDIA GeForce 4MX420.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

If you have renamed Winword.exe, that you haven't a hope of starting Word,
since that is the Word executable. Rename it back to Winword.exe and then
rename Normal.dot. This time you might want to print out
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm and follow the
instructions more carefully.

Ah, okay. I've looked at the article now, and I see what you're saying. I
overlooked your addition that you had repaired Office. Does Word start with
the /a switch? If so, then you can be sure the problem is in Normal.dot, the
Registry, or an add-in.

Hi Suzanne,

After much tearing of hair out and trying to look all
over KB, I've given up and removed MS Office 2000 and
reinstalled Word 97.

Word 97 had a problem too hence installing Office 2000.
Word 97 now sorted by changing compatability to Windows
2000 - strange! - especially as it worked until recently
as W98.

I had a look for the /a switch under properties for Word
2000 (as described in other news items), but from what I
remember, there was no /a switch.
What happens in this case?

When I try again to install Office 2000 (hopefully later
this week), I will have a look at the Normal.dot template.
I'll also have a look at the compatability properties and
change them to see if that makes any difference.

For info., no add-in's added (never got the chance to do
that due to the problem) so I doubt it could be that.
If the problem reoccurrs, the only other option is the
Registry.
I wouldn't like to think where to begin to search for the
problem within the Registry.
I've run Win Doctor a number of times to pick up any
registry etc. problems, so perhaps it has fixed something
incorrectly? Where does one begin?

I will keep an eye on this message thread/newsgroup to
see if any further updates and will let you know the
outcome when I reinstall Office 2000 again.

Thanks for your help.

P.S. Da*n shame, but I've deleted a number of good games
and have system restored PC back to May - a little
premature I think :(

Hi Paul,

When you start encountering problems saving files then change the
compatibility setting back. Word 97 is compatible with all current
versions of Windows. :)

In the future a full description of the problem *you* are
encountering, the version of Word you using, patches your have
installed and operating system is very important information. Adding
on to another poster's problem may be to your disadvantage since your
details may be different than theirs.

For example the KB article you found only applies to Word 2000 on
Windows 98. If you have Compatibility Options then you aren't using
Windows 98.

Additionally, I suspect if you followed all of the steps in the
troubleshooting guide then you wouldn't have gone to the extreme of
restoring your PC. The article provides detailed instructions on how
to start Word with the /a switch and how to find the Registry key.

....or prior to a system restore, as the article indicates, post back
to the group with the results of what you found after working through
the article along with details of the problem you are encountering,
version of Word you are using and patches that are installed.

A system restore is an extreme measure to take when chances are the
resolution is simple. :)
