Word 2000 Acting Up

My program has suddenly started doing two strange things. First, when I try
to access a document in "My Docs" by clicking on it I get an error message,
"Windows cannot find, etc." but when I then go back to that document in "My
Docs" and right click it and click "Open", it opens OK.

Secondly, when some of the documents, not all, now open they do so in a
smaller font than I saved it in and the regular text is followed by a couple
of pages of what appears to be a long column at the left margin of data or
instructions that start with:
Normal
Normal
Default paragraph font
etc.

I'm using Windows ME. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate this annoyance.
Many thanks.

In the File Open dialog in Word, change the "Files of type" setting from
"Recover Text from Any File" to "All Word Documents" (or your normal
setting).

Thanks for your response. Your suggestion works well if I open Word first
and then open a document in it. At that point I can change the settings as
you recommended. However, even after having done that, I still can't open
the document if I go out of Word and then try to do so directly from "My
Documents". The change in setting doesn't seem to be retained.
