Word 2000 and 2003 fonts

I currently have a document file on a CD saved in Word
2000 format and all the text is in the Monotype Corsiva
font - fancy for a wedding invitation. I got a new
computer with Office 2003 and when I open the file the
font and size are completely different. How do I open a
file of an older version in 2003 and not loose my font
type, etc?

If you can still open the file on the original machine -- in Word 2000 -- do
a Save As and go to TOOLS --> GENERAL OPTIONS and select EMBED FONTS. That
will take care of THIS document -- any PC it is opened on will display
correctly.

Otherwise -- you need to get that font file installed into the Windows\Fonts
folder on the new machine.

PS -- embedding fonts does make the file size larger -- so you may not want
to set Word to always embed fonts.

I don't see this option in Office 2000 MSWord. I see an option to embed True
Type fonts in the SAVE options.

I would suggest installing the font Monotype Corsiva in the Font applets
folder (Control Panel). If you have that computer with the Monotype Corsiva
font, copy it to a diskette or some sort of back medium. Go the "Font
Folder" in the Control Panel and click "File > Install new Font > Navigate
to the location of the Monotype Corsiva font.

That's what you need, but it won't work unless the font's license permits
embedding.

Hello Tracy,

The most common cause for font changes when opening Word documents and
seeing font changes is that the font is not the same font as the one on the
previous machine or that the font is actually missing on the new machine.
If the font were for example an Adobe type font and the font isn't
installed on the new machine you may see a font change. When a particular
font on your older documents doesn't appear correctly you can set the font
substitution option to change the unavailable font. To get to this option
click on Tools | Options | and click the Compatibility tab, Click the Font
Substitution button and set up the font to be substituted. You might also
want to check on which application installed the font that you may be
missing. One other possibility for the issue is that the documents from the
old system may have some slight corruption. To check for corruption you can
Open Word | click on File and Open, select the file to be checked and then
click the down arrow on the Open button and select Open and Repair. This
will usually show any corruption that may be in the document.

A good example that often catches out users is Gill Sans and Gill Sans MT.
They may look identical, but they have slightly different spacing, one fits,
one won't.
