Word 2000 blinks off when I try to start

For a year or two, about once a week when I used Word an
error message would pop up: "Microsoft Word for Windows
has enountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience." Now the message pops up, and the
program closes, as soon as I try to start it up. Every
time. I reinstalled Word 2000; didn't help. I'd remove
the program from my system and start over, but I'm afraid
I'll lose all my files in the process. Can anyone out
there help me on this?
