Using Windows XP and Microsoft Word 2000
When closing a word document my computer reboots. When I
run Nortons System Utilities it comes up with the
following message:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\MAPISRVR.EXE - cannot access a
necessary file "gapi32.dll".
Anyone help??

This is a bug in Norton and they should have a resolution to the problem at
their support site.

Well, I don't use Norton Utilities, but its possible that you might need to
install the latest Service Packs and Patches for your version of Word. Or,
check for any updates for Norton Utilities.

Did you read the answers? It is a Norton problem. Go to Norton for a
solution.

: Did you find a fix for this as I have a similar problem.

Hello helpful person,

Yes I did read the thread which pointed us to the Symantec site (a full link
would have been most helpful) but as I use Norton Corporate Edition and the
fix asks you to turn off "office" support this doesn't work as corporate
edition doesn't use this function.
Again, if someone has/had this problem and can direct me to a fix I would be
most grateful.

From Office MVP Beth Melton on Norton CE:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

If turning off the Office Plug-in was the solution to this , I would have
said. The gapi32.dll problem is a completely different kettle of fish. I
don't know the link but I do know it is a Symantec problem. From what I can
gather, something in several of the Symantec products looks for gapi32 and
it isn't where it expect the file. The file needs copying from its current
location (system32 folder?) to where the app thinks it should be.
