Word 2000 closes immediately on opening

On double clicking the icon, word2000 opens the blank
document but immediately closes after that. even if any
doc file is double-clicked, the file opens but shuts down
soon after.
have tried the following:
1. run the 'repair office' option from the cdrom
2. removed the entire msoffice2000 application from the pc.
3. re-installed word and excel 2000 into a new folder
instead of the default .
Still the same symptoms. The pc is a P4-with windows98se.

have approached microsoft tech support. they have yet to
come up with a solution.

Can anyone please guide me how to come out of this
situation.
