Word 2000 Date changes when letter is opened?

I seem to have a funny issue with my Word 2000 program.
Everytime I open up an old letter/document it always
updates the letter with the current date. I have the
special function selected to not auto-update the date. The
program seems to still change the date? The program
version is 9.0.2720, perhaps it is a defective version?
Please help!

You've got a {DATE} field instead of date text. Press Alt+F9 to toggle the
field display. Change DATE to CREATEDATE. Then Alt+F9 again and F9 to
update.
