Word 2000 .doc file corruption(?)

Windows XP Home
Word 2000
80 yr old user (dear old mom)
186 page .doc file
512 memory
plenty of hd space

While working on the document (no images, nothing fancy, except a lot of
text) Word will lock up and trash the document. I "think" this started after
I had emailed her a copy of the document and instead of saving it to the hd
before working on it, she opened it from the email attachment and began
working directly on it.

Word has recovered it a couple of times, and it'd be ok for a few days, but
it eventually happens again. I've tried Copy/Pasting the entire doc into a
new doc, but eventually it happens again.

The file was fine (and the same length) prior to the email incident - we're
just working on translation from language to another, basically proofing, no
major changes.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

tnx,
/R

Others far cleverer may have better ideas but what I would do is first make
a security copy under explorer, then load the document down under Word and
save it as a text file. Switch off completely. Then start up again, load in
the text file, which will have lost all formatting etc. Then select all,
change the font, margins, linespacing as required and save back as a Word
..doc file.

While that drastic step may eventually be necessary, there's an easier
step to try first. Select the entire document *except the final
paragraph mark* (which you have a better chance of excluding if you
click the ¶ button on the toolbar to turn on nonprinting marks). Copy
that to the clipboard and paste into a new document. You'll lose the
headers and footers, and any special margins you may have, but you'll
preserve most of the formatting.

Ok, I'll try that...there's no special headers or footers to worry about, in
fact there's little formatting except double spacing and fonts so either
suggestion may work.

Thanks guys!
