Word 2000 document compare

When I compare documents, Word 2000 often gets stuck in an endless loop, from
which the only escape is Ctl/Alt/Del. This often happens with large
documents but sometimes even with small documents. Any ideas about why or
possible fixes (I've got all the updates installed). Is the Compare
Documents function fixed and working well in Word 2003?
