Word 2000 document does not open in Word 2003

Some files we have created in Word 2000 cannot be opened in Word 2003. The
error message reads: "Word was unable to read this document. It may be
corrupt. ........"

I have applied the relevant patch/update from Microsoft, but this does not
help on this particular file. I have also installed Office 2003 SP 1 - to no
avail.

Does anyone have further information on this problem?
