Hi,
I have spent hours trying to resolve this problem. I've
searched through dozens of web pages on your
troubleshooting site as well as other sites. I say all of
this not for a gold star, but because I really am hoping
someone can help. Here's the deal: I was working on a
rather long document (almost 200 pages) and after one of
my last saves, Word 2000 told me the program was low on
memory and to save my file. So, when I went to save, a
couple more odd messages popped up, one asking me if I
wanted to save to the normal template, I said no and
closed the program. When I went to re-open the document,
Word told me the document/path name was invalid and that I
needed to check permission or for the name. Having no
luck there, I went to "My Documents" folder and discovered
the file size had been reduced to 4K instead of the 3,765K
it was supposed to be at. So, I made copies of the
document and also tried compressing one of the copies. In
its' compressed state, the copy document does read 3,765K,
but I still cannot open this compressed file either. I
followed several steps from your troubleshooting site to
fix the problem, including installing a WinRecovery Demo,
trying all the suggestions using the "Options" feature
under Toolbar menu, tried the "Normal.dot" suggestions
(including changing the name, it worked on 2, but the
other normal templates said I did not have permission) and
the "Recover from Any Text" feature under the File menu.
I also tried deleting unused programs to free up memory on
the computer. All to no avail. I also
tried "Repairing" Office 2000 twice, not such luck and
finally, I've just did a search using ~*.* and when I
found the backup copy it opened as one page, still reading
as 4K and the document itself contained rows of box
symbols and pornsite names. Now, the weird thing to me is
that this problem occured on Sat., Aug. 23 and I didn't
have online access until yesterday (Mon., Aug. 25) through
new DSL. I had AOL some months prior, but had closed it
earlier in the year. And considering I don't visit porn
sites, how did this happen? Is this a virus? And if it
is, how can I get rid of it and bring my file back? Thank
you, thank you. Sorry for the long email -- as I said
before, the document I was working on was long, so this is
probably just frustrated fingers looking to get back to
work.
Many, many, many thanks.
