Word 2000 documents will not open

This computer is an HP Pavlion 521a preloaded with
Windows XP home. I also have Microsoft Office 2000
professional running.
When I try to open Word 2000 documents they immediatly
shut down and I receive the following error signiture:

Error Signature
AppName :winword exe AppVer 9.0.0.7924 ModName: mso9dll
ModVer9.0.0.6926 Offset 0081ed2

This error occured after I loaded Nortons Anti Virus
2003, prior to this with NAV2002 the Word 2000 worked.
Excel is not effected.
HP say that this is a Microsoft or Symantec problem and
microsoft indicate that it an HP problem, Symantec say
that with the error signature above that it is a
Microsoft problem.
All the Microsoft Office patches have been down loaded at
06/09/03 but the problem persists.
I shall be glad of any assistance.

Norton has an office addin you can disable with the
following instructions (pasted from their site)
To enable the plug-in for Office 2000 or Office XP

Start NAV. If NAV is part of Norton SystemWorks (NSW) or
Norton Internet Security (NIS), then start NSW or NIS,
and then select Norton AntiVirus.
Click Options, and then click Miscellaneous.
In the "How to keep Microsoft Office documents protected"
section, check Enable Office plug-in.
Click OK, and then exit NAV.

If the problem is only in word I would try a different
default printer (even if you have to create a generic
text only printer) since a bad printer driver will cause
this kind of behavior as well.
