Word 2000 does not display images in a Word 2003 saved file

Somebody created a doc using Word 2003 and inserted JPGs into the file. When I try to open it using Word 2000, the images do not display and a little red "x" appears in the top left corner. When I try to open the doc in Word XP, the program crashes. When I try to open it in Word 2003, all is fine.

Other info. Using the original document in Word 2003, I copied and pasted the only the graphics into a new file (still in Word 2003) and saved it. I open it in Word 2000 and the same red "x" appears. Next, I get the original graphics from that person, open the original doc in Word 2003 and reinsert the graphics and saved it. Opened the new saved doc in Word 2000 and all is well.

Any ideas?

In all versions of Word, make sure "fast saves" is turned off in Tools | Options | Save.

The red X can mean that Word can't find a linked file. Relative paths can be
a particular problem, and that could perhaps be the difference of behaviour
between the versions. In a document with the problem graphics visible, take
a look under Edit > Links. (It's no good looking for the link if the Red X
is displayed, as then the link isn't available for edit - or correction.
Grrr...)
