Word 2000 Does not open and freezes the PC

I have a strange problem. Word 2000 running on Win98. When
I open a document Word fires up but freezes at the Word
2000 splash screen.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled no change!

Can anyone help?

Reinstalling rarely helps because it does not overwrite Normal.dot or the
Word entries in the Registry or delete add-ins from Word's Startup folder,
and these are the three most likely sources of problems. See

Thanks ... I deleted the normal.dot and now it works!

Try the Newsgroup "microsoft.public.word.application.errors". They have
their people monitoring and answering these kinds of questions.
