Word 2000 error message

Having trouble accessing the "File" option. Error
message reads "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem
and needs to shut down. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." Went to mvps.org... and got the info on
renaming any Normal.dot files but, lo and behold, my
computer cannot find any. They are either hiding VERY
well or have been inadvertently deleted. Have tried
uninstalling and reinstalling Word to no avail. Any
ideas?

Normal.dot is a hidden file in Windows XP. Set your Folder Options to
display Hidden files.
