Word 2000 error opening

I get the following error every time I try to open Word:

Winword caused an erroer in winword.exe. Word will now
close. If the problem persists try re-starting your
computer.

I've restarted, re-booted, un-installed, re-installed, run
scandisk, disk defragmenter, re-installed again, tried to
restore from the day before the last time I used Word
successfully, etc. I am out of ideas. Can anyone help me?
