Word 2000 Fatal Exception

T

Tim Ross

I'm getting a fatal exception (blue screen of death)error
in Word 2000, only when I attempt to edit a document. I
can open word, and create and save just fine, I can even
open and view a document, but as soon as I try to type the
blue screen pops up and the system crashes. I have
installed all service packs and patches to date. I even
tried to uninstall and reinstall word but that did not
help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello Tim,

The issue sounds like a driver issue of some type, I would check for any
add-ins that may be installed. A good test is to start the PC in Windows
Safe Mode and then Open Word and type into a document. If this works we
know that the issue is with something that is being loaded in Normal mode.
Which is a Video driver issue, Add-Ins or third party applications. Another
test is to start Word in Word Safe Mode ie Start | Run |type Windowd.exe
/a. This will start Word without loading any add-ins.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hi Tim,

Did you try starting Word using the /a switch? Go to Start/Run and
run:

Winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If the error does not occur then chances are the problem is one of the
following:

Corrupt Normal.dot. Locate Normal.dot and rename it to OldNormal.dot.
Word will create a new one upon starting.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded. If the problem still
exists then you can delete the new Normal.dot and rename your
OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot.

Registry Corruption: See this article for instructions on rebuilding
the Word/Data key:

Global template/add-in: Go to Tools/Options/File Locations and note
the location of the Startup folder. Exit Word and locate the Startup
folder and see if any files are placed in the folder. If more than
one, move them one at a time and try starting Word after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.
