Word 2000 formatting problem

I have applied all Office updates. However, now when I
create a document, all attempted formatting applies
itself to all text in the document. Example: Create and
center a title, press enter for the next line and try to
left justify that line, change font, etc., and the title
line adopts the changes as well. Change the title back
and following text also changes.

It doesn't seem to make any difference how many lines in
the doc. Numbering and bulleting also apply themselves
to all text in the document.

Has any one had this problem? Is there a fix?
