Word 2000 freezes then crashes in XP

After checking all related posts to Word 2000 crashes and
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm, especially part 2
of it, I'm surprised mine still crashes.

Word 2000 on my XP system does start fine, then, after about 3 blinks of the
cursor, it freezes then crashes. I do "send the error" report to Microsoft,
but nothing comes back in response...quite odd.

This happens when starting it with winword.exe /a from the Run menu. It
happens after I checked "All User" and my
ApplicationData\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP folder (there was nothing there).

An odd thing is that on my whole C: drive there is no Normal.dot (nor
normal.dot).

I did remove the registry folder DATA from the Office\9.0 folder (I had an
Office\8.0 folder, but there was no DATA in it).

I'm not on a network...just my PC and a printer here at home. And I'm
running McAfee VirusScan, not the Norton products.

In addition, I've repaired/reinstalled Office 2000 and the problem
continues. I've also repaired/reinstalled Word 2000 alone and the problem
continues.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

This is unlikely to be caused by normal.dot as starting using the /a switch
bypasses it. However, to see normal.dot, you need to enable View Hidden
Files and Folders option in Windows Explorer. In Windows XP, it is normally
located in Documents and Settings, Username, Application Data, Microsoft,
Templates folder.

I also suggest that you check on the Internet support sites that your
graphics and printer drivers are up to date, then reinstall both (deleting
the current printer first).

Thanks for the pointers...unfortunately they haven't cleared the crashing up.

I had my HP printer check HP's website and it/they said everything was
up-to-date. I downloaded the most recent appropriate drivers for my graphics
card (it could be that the card is too old...I got it 2001 or so) and some of
the drivers have build dates as of 11/21/04 and the like.

The last odd thing is, I checked my PC's directories for the normal.dot (I
always have hidden files made visible) but there is no normal.dot to be
found...quite odd.

Another possible complicating factor is that I tried to install Office 97
last week...after that failed, I got the Office 2000 software (from school,
we've got a school-wide license). Unfortunately, when I tried to uninstall
Office 97, it said it couldn't find things. When I installed Office 2000, it
looked like it was cleaning up the mess created by the unsuccessful Office 97
install/uninstall.

Please let me know your thoughts and thanks again for the help.

Time to reformat your drive and reinstall everything again as it sounds as
though it is completely screwed.
