Word 2000 freezes when I open it

Microsoft word freezes at the splash screen when I try to open it. I
have erased the normal.dot file and it opens fine once but after that
it does the same thing.

I have tried erasing the
\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Data registry
entry.

I don't have any network printers.

I don't have any anti virus software turned on.

If i go to start-run and type winword /a, it will open fine every time.

Please help

This is usually due to a corrupt printer driver. But see

I tried installing a new (different) printer and making it default, but
word still freezes

I have had this happen to me twice over the years and both times it turned
out to be damaged icons. What I did to fix this was to delete all icons for
Word (if you have more than one) and then located Winword.exe and right
clicked on it and clicked on COPY then in a blank space on the desktop right
clicked and chose Paste Shortcut.
