Word 2000 freezing up

I am running Word 2000 on ME - it came loaded with my Dell
as part of the Works Suite.

Friday, I go to open Word and it freezes. The title box
appears and that's about it. Sometimes it will start to
load the template, but just shows Microsoft word at the
top, no menus or anything.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, ran virus scan, scan
disk, downloaded all the service packs . . . . . still
freezes up. Sometimes I will get a message that 'winword
has caused an error in USER.exe. Sometimes it says that
resources are extremely low. All other programs work
fine: Excel, Access, AOL, my DSL etc. . . .

Any suggestions, help is greatly appreciated - I have
spent 4 days on this!!!

that if you are running Word freestanding (not starting it from the Works
Task Launcher, you probably want/need to uninstall the Microsoft Works Suite
Add-in for Word. Do this through Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. This
will not uninstall Works or Word, just the add-in that links them (which
causes many problems in Word).
