Word 2000 freezing up

While using Word, the document will freeze every seven seconds or so and a small hour glass will take the place of the cursor. I have no idea why this is happening. Word was fine until about a month ago when this started. It is so frustrating because I will be typing and then it will freeze up and skip whatever I was typing during the freeze. Please help!!!

Hi, Tiamat10. Try disabling "check spelling as you type" and "check grammar as you type" in Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar. When you're done typing, you can do a spellcheck and grammar check by pressing F7.
