Word 2000 hangs at "splash screen"

I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP-2 on a Compaq that came with a
"trial version" Word 2003 preinstalled. After the trial period expired I
installed my copy of Office 2000. Word 2000 will not start now (the other
Office applications seem okay). The Word 2000 splash screen (first screen you
briefly see at application startup) will display but at that point it
freezes at the splash screen and won't do anything. I have deinstalled
Office 2000 and reinstalled, but that didn't help. I never did uninstall
Word 2003 and Word 2003 doesn't appear in the add/remove software list in
Control Panel at this point. Any idea of how I can make Word 2000 run??

The problem generally is a corrupted normal.dot, registry entries or
add-ins, none of which (sadly) is affected by uninstalling and reinstalling.
