Word 2000 hangs opening any template

I just got a new computer and installed Office 2000 from the original CD
I've used before. Then I made sure to go to the MS Office Update site
and get all the updates. So far so good.

But I am now finding that I cannot create a new Word document from a
template. Neither built-in nor my own templates work any more. Word just
hangs at 99% cpu forever.

The major differences between my old computer and my new one:

1. New computer has Windows XP Media Center edition; old computer has
Windows XP Home edition.

2. New computer has 1 GB RAM; old computer has 512 MB RAM.

Other Office 2000 apps such as Outlook and Excel seem to work fine. Word
itself works fine, right up until I try to create a new doc from a a
template.

Any ideas, O gurus?

Thanks,
- Bob

Thanks. I guess I should have mentioned I'd already tried the usual
steps, including Detect and Repair, Reinstall via control panel, and
full manual uninstall and reinstall. I'd also searched the knowledge
base but couldn't find this particular issue.

I encounter this problem immediately after install from CD, prior to
installing any service packs and updates. Problem persists after
installing all updates.

Are there any known issues with Word 2000 getting confused with 1 GB of
RAM installed? Unless this is known to be a non-issue, I guess my next
step could be to pull out one of my two 512 MB memory modules and retry.

Thanks,
- Bob

Solved it. My clue was that if I switched Word to Normal view, I could
create new template-based docs. But if I then switched to Print Layout
view, word hung, the same as it did if I tried to create a new doc while
in Print Layout view.

Reinstalling the default printer fixed the problem.

Thanks,
- Bob
