Word 2000 Illegal Operation

When cutting and pasting within a Word 2000 document
get "this program has performed an illegal operation and
will be shut down..."

OS - Win98 SE and XP Professional with latest service packs

What has been done
1. Removed and reinstalled Office and applied all service
packs from the Microsoft site

2. Copying and pasting does work

Any and all suggestions much appreciated
