Word 2000 "Insert" Question

I've used Word now for at least a hundred years with no problems.., but on
my last install of Word 2000 when I go to insert a photo I can't see it!!
In the old days when you "insert" a photo from your files it would instantly
appear and then I could shape it.., but now only the "place holder"
representing the photo appears!
