Getting an invalid page fault when loading word.

Have tried:

reinstalling win98SE.
reinstalling MS Office (including deleting office directory and shared
directory)
deleting normal.dot and registry entry recommended in knowledge article 236319

can run word using "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /a

Out of ideas.

Thanks for getting back so quickly.

I had already reviewed that article. I believe I have done everything
relevant. I have also reinstalled my printer.

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in
module WINWORD.EXE at 0167:30062618.

Ouch. I was hoping the error message would implicate a driver or add-in.
Only Microsoft Tech Support can really evaluate the type of message you're
getting, I think. They have fault "buckets" that these fall into. Are you
getting a prompt to report the error to MS? If so, I strongly urge you to do
so. You might be surprised to get a reply if it's a known error.

Hi Jeffrey,

If you can run Word using the /a switch then the problem isn't with
the application but either the Registry, Normal.dot, or an add-in.

Since you've already ruled out Normal.dot and the Registry did you
check for Add-ins? Word could have one of two types of add-ins: Global
templates: those in one of the Startup folders or COM add-ins: those
loaded through the Registry.

To determine if you are using any global templates go to
Tools/Templates and Add-ns and see if there are any global templates
or add-ins listed. If so they are located in one of your Startup
folders. The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under
Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder can be
found in the Office installation path..(You can also use Windows
Search to locate the templates as well)

Take a look in each folder and if you find more than one file move
them one at a time and try duplicating the error after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

As of Word 2000, Word can have COM add-ins. To determine whether or
not you are using COM add-ins you can add the "COM Add-In" command to
your toolbar:

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

For more information on the COM Add-Ins utility, see this article:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm

If you've already ruled out both types of add-ins then there are also
some add-ins that do not display in the COM Add-Ins utility. The
utility found in Word will only display COM add-ins that are installed
per user and some are installed per machine.

The per machine add-ins can be found but it may take a little doing.
First try going to Help/About Microsoft Word and click the System Info
command. Then expand the branch for either Applications\Word 2000\COM
Add-Ins or Office\Word 2000\COM Add-Ins and compare the list you find
in System Info with the one using the COM Add-Ins utility. If that
doesn't shed some light on anything then post back and we'll go from
there. :)

Hi Beth:

Thank you, tried everything and this is what I found.

1. Added Com add-in button. webpage.dll was listed but not checked. I
removed it, closed word, and rebooted. Did not fix problem.

2. Under Help, about, I located system information. The button depresses but
nothing happens. So I am unable to check information here. Is there another
way?

3. Also, when I was in the registry, I noticed that there were entries for
both, word 8.0 and 9.0. Could there be some kind of conflict, although these
entries have obviously been there for a while and I had no problem til
recently.

Are you sure you waited long enough? It may take a few seconds for the
dialog to display.

If that isn't it then you should be able to open System Info from any
Office application using the same steps. Failing that then go to
Start/Run and run: msinfo32

Note that Word needs to be running in order to view the application
details.

I waited after clicking system info, but nothing. I tried to run it from
Excel, same result.

I tried to run msinfo 32, it is not apparently there. I searched for it and
I only have the files msinfo32.ini which is empty and msinfo.chm, the help
file.

Confused, because I just resinstalled Win98 SE, last week.

Thank you for your persistence.

There are four files:
Msioff9.ocx
Offprvps.dll
Offprov.exe
Msioff9.mof

Do I need to install something from the Win98 disk?

Hi Jeff,

It's been so long since I used Windows 98 I have no idea. :-(

You might try another route I was going to suggest if System Info
didn't find anything. Download the Process Explorer from:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

- Start Word
- Run the Process Explorer utility
- In the upper pane select Excel.exe
- Locate the "View DLLs" command in the Toolbar (if you see View
Handles then View DLLs is already in use)
- In the lower pane locate the DLLs and see if you can determine which
DLL could be causing the issue. The Description and Company Name
columns may help you out. (Click the Name column heading to sort)
- Locate the path for the DLL in a column on the right
- Once found exit Word and rename the DLL to prevent it from loading.

Note it is best to rename the file extension rather than the file
name.

If you can not determine if a DLL is needed by the application then
use File/Save As to save a copy of the data as text. Then you can
copy/paste the DLLs from the Notepad for us to take a look at.

Thanks,

Trying the tool. I note that running word the regular way (when it crashes)
loads a smaller set of Dlls than with the /a switch. I have to reconcile the
two to see if anything might be the problem.

Will get back in a couple days.
