word 2000 lost file format I think

I have a file saved to disc and when I open it I get what
looks like code. How do I get it back so word will read it
right?

If you saved it directly to a floppy (as opposed to copying it) and/or are
trying to open it directly from a floppy, then it may well be corrupt. But
make sure that the "Files of type" setting in File | Open is not "Recover
Text from Any File."

Are you sure that it's a Word file?
Also, is your "Files of Type" set to "Recover text from any file" vs. "All
Word Documents"?
