Word 2000 Mail Merge w/ Access- No sort tab???

when i use a query from access as my data source in ms
word 2000 for my mail merge, i cannot access the sort
tab. i can access the filter tab just fine but for some
reason the sort tab is grayed out and unusable. however,
when i try the same thing on word 2002, it is readily
available. anyone know why?
