Word 2000 missing data1.msi

I am using a licensed version of Word 2000. However, I cannot locate the
installation cd's. I have a Word file from a newer version of the
application (*.docx). Is there any way that I can find the necessary
data1.msi file online so I can download and install it which would allow me
to open the .docx file?

Hi Jaye,

MS doesn't provide online replacements for the older product CDs. All of the Office product family had the same named core file on
CD#1, basically 'Data1.MSI', but each is a different, non interchangeable file version.

If you're seeing a request for the CDs it's possible that the Windows Installer has detected a possible problem in your Office/Word
2000 installation it's trying to repair. If you have only Word 2000 then it may have come with MS Works Suite and would be CD#1 of
that set.

Thanks Bob. However, I don't think it's an Windows Installer error. It's a
specified file format that my version of Word cannot import because the
feature is not currently installed. I cannot install the feature 'cause I do
not have the installation cd.

So what you are telling me is that I am out of luck.

Hi Jaye,

It's not a Windows Installer Error, it's the installer asking for the CD because Office appears to have an issue. Once it starts
asking for it, you may be able to stop the prompts from occuring but without the CD you may be delaying rather than fixing an issue.

Thanks for your help. But this is not an error. The system is looking for
files to install which would allow for the .docx file to be imported. It's
just like using Outlook for the first time and you want to export your
contact list to an Excel file. Outlook will tell you that the engine is not
installed and ask if you want to install it now. If you say yes, you will
have to insert the Office install cd in order for the "export to Excel"
funtion to be installed.

I guess I will have to ask the creator of the newer version of the Word file
to change the file save as type to Word 2000.

Have you already downloaded the Compatibility Pack
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en)
and you're getting this error when you try to install it?

Hi Jaye,

I'm not saying it's necessarily an error. However, if you're installing a feature that is not part of the original Office product,
as in the case of the Converter/compatibility pack, and you are then asked for product CD that can be an indication that there was
an issue detected that the installer/Office want to resolve first. Office 2000, unfortunately, asked for the CD more often than
newer versions of Office do This can also happen if you have previously 'cancelled out' of some requests of the type you
mentioned with Office 2000.

FWIW, when installing the converter/compatibility pack on a PC here that has Office 2000 on it the CD/installation source wasn't
requested.

You shouldn't need the disc to install the compatibility pack
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101686761033.aspx however, if
you don't have the disc you are merely postponing problems that you will not
be able to fix. See if you can find someone with a copy of Word 2000 who
will let you borrow the disc to copy it (you would use your original
installation key if required). Copy the disc to your hard drive and point
the installer to the folder on your hard drive.
