Word 2000 no longer runs

T

Terry Pinnell

Help! On trying to run Word, I get this:

=================================
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Run time Error!
Program: C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office\WINWORD.EXE
abnormal program termination
=================================

I can run Excel 2000 OK.

I tried using the Repair option from my Office 2000 Premium CD
(started from the 'Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium' entry in my
Add/Remove list), but the message remains.

I have Windows XP Home.

After much googling for similar problems, I think I have isolated the
problem to normal.dot. I replaced that with an older, very basic one,
and Word now opens OK. But that now raises the issue of whether it's
possible to somehow recover all my settings, macros, toolbar icons,
etc. Can anyone advise me on this please?

Sorry that this thread is still a monologue...<g>

It sure looks like Repligo, or my incorrect installation of it, is the
cause of my problems. I got myself into a mess while trialing it,
together with its Microsoft 'Integration' facilities. I'm now sure
somehow trashed my Word 2000 normal.dot, so I've had to revert to a
plain template with none of my heavy customisation. But despite
uninstalling Repligo & Repligo Viewer from PPC and PC, I still had
Repligo icons in my toolbar and a 'Repligo' item in my Word menu,
which I've removed using Tools > Customize.

That still leaves me with a plain vanilla normal.dot though ;-(

Hi Terry,

First you can transfer your customizations to your new Normal.dot
using the Organizer found under Tools/Templates and Add-ins.

However I suspect that once you do copy your customizations you'll
encounter the same error. It sounds like you have a malfunctioning
macro in your Repligo add-in (which may have modified your Normal.dot
when it was installed) or the add-in is creating a conflict with
another macro stored in your Normal.dot.

Since you are encountering a Runtime error then I'd say the macro is
attempting to run when Word starts. Take a look at your macros and see
if you have an AutoExec macro. If so determine where it's located and
temporarily rename so you can see if it is causing the problem.

Thanks Beth, glad to have you on the case. Can you amplify please. To
start with, how can I 'take a look at' my macros? Running with that
plain normal.dot, Word doesn't show any.

Or do you mean look at all my .dot files (in various places) and see
what macros they contain? I confess, it's been ages since I did any
management like this, and have probably forgotten the very basics!

Yes, I do get that error persistently. I thought that, with Word
running under a plain template, I could copy across one of my several
oldish-but-still-fullish normal.dot files - but still get that error.

That last bit was potentially confusing. What I meant to say was:

I thought that, having closed Word I could copy across one of my
several oldish-but-still-fullish normal.dot files to the \templates
folder, naming it normal.dot - but I still get that error.

Hi Terry,

Since you are no longer encountering the error you may need to replace
your 'vanilla' Normal.dot with one you encountered the error in order
to determine the exact cause.

Once you are back to the Runtime error then go to Tools/Macro/Macros
and see if there are any 'Auto' macros listed.

If you do not find a macro as the cause then take a look under
Tools/Templates and Add-ins and see if there are any global templates
listed.

If so then these files are located in either your Word Startup folder
or Office\Startup folder. The location of your Word Startup folder can
be found under Tools/Options/File Locations. The Office\Startup folder
is either in the installation path or your <UserName>\Application Data
path.

If more than one then move each file out of the folder one at a time
until you find the source of the problem.

If you do not have any global templates and you checked for macros
under Tools/Macro/Macros then you may have COM add-ins. These are
added into Word via the Registry. To determine whether or not you are
using COM Add-In you can add the "COM Add-in" command to your toolbar:

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

For more information on COM Add-Ins, see this article:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm

Additionally, if you are encountering a Runtime error in the Repligo
macros or add-in it wasn't functioning correctly anyway.

Beth, perhaps I wasn't clear enough, but the point is that the Runtime
error prevents my *running* Word. As soon as I click OK to remove the
message, Word closes. The only ways I can run Word are
- via the Run command, with winword.exe /a
- after trial and error, getting an 'acceptable' normal.dot into the
\templates folder before running Word from its normal 'Blank Document'
icon.
If you do not find a macro as the cause then take a look under

Same issue - I can't! Catch 22...

or Office\Startup folder. The location of your Word Startup folder can
be found under Tools/Options/File Locations. The Office\Startup folder
is either in the installation path or your <UserName>\Application Data

I have no valid files in either Startup folder! (There are a couple of
very old ones that at soem stage I renamed with a DOK extension.)
If more than one then move each file out of the folder one at a time
until you find the source of the problem.

OK, I added that (while Word was using the basic normal.dot of
course). Clicking it shows two Add-Ins available. Only one is checked.
I don't think it's implicated (it's called MobiPocket), and it made no
difference when I'd unchecked it and reopened Word; so I've rechecked
it again.)

I've uninstalled all traces of Repligo. (Add/Remove didn't do much of
a thorough job. I had to delete various entries with Regedit too.)

So, basically, I'm still in the mire... ;-(

Unchecking an add-in in Tools | Templates and Add-ins doesn't prevent it
from loading the next time you start Word.
