word 2000 not compatible with xp home edition

I have two computers networking in my house . one using
windows 98 with word 2000 and the other with xp home
edition . when i try to open a document from xp on my 98 ,
the document opens but scrambled. How can I fix this ?

Look under File, Open dialog and make sure that you have left the Recover
Text from Any File option set.
