Word 2000 Not Responding

Stephen Flanagan

I'm a newbie here and hope someone can help. Having problems with word 2000
not opening. All other Microsoft Office apps (excel, PowerPoint etc work
fine). As background my operating system is Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit
version and I'm using Microsoft Office 2000 which has worked fine until a
few days ago and I have no idea why word has stopped working.

If I try to open a word doc from windows explorer or open word itself then
it opens a blank document with no toolbars and eventually states "Not
Responding". The error message states:-

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: AppHangB1
Application Name: WINWORD.EXE
Application Version: 9.0.0.2717
Application Timestamp: 36f08fb3
Hang Signature: c816

OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1

So far I have tried the following.
1 Uninstalling Office and re-installing (3 times) to no avail.
2 I tried to use system restore to the last time I know that word worked
but the system restore failed. Did work for a restore point of about 10
days ago but didn't fix it.
3. I have deleted the Office 2000 data key in the registry but didn't fix.
I noticed that I have Office versions 12, 8 & 9 in the software Microsoft
Office reg key- is that normal?
4. I have renamed the word.dot template in case it was corrupt.
5. Have checked the manage toolbars and they all appear to be Microsoft
ones.
6. I can open word using the run winword.exe /a command.

Unfortunately my system came with a 90 day trial of Office 2007 which has
expired and although I tried to delete it - it is still there as I can open
a word doc in Office 2007 but can't amend it (I guess because the trial has
expired!). I suspect the Office 2007 may be causing the issue but not sure
why it's just started? Only other major changes are that I've moved to
Internet explorer version 8 and also ran the optional Windows Live
Essentials update - can't think why they would impact word?

Can anyone offer any suggestions. I'm coming to the conclusion I should
either just buy Office 2007 or use Open Office free software but haven't
given up yet. Hope you experts can suggest a fix :).

Sorry about the blank post. I am obviously not an expert. I have the same
problem. There is a lengthy process to uninstall the newer Office and I used
it. (see: http//support.microsoft.com/kb/928218) to no avail. I have posted
this same error message myself and in all the time since no one has
responded. I am currrently researching the problem and I will happily post
anything I find. I am trying to get 2000 Office Pro to work on my laptop.
I'll post anything I find here. Good Luck!

Comments:

1. Rarely ever works - just a waste of time
2. Good idea that may have worked
3. Multiple versions of Office (Word) listed in the registry is quite normal
4. I presume you meant 'normal.dot'?
5. Unlikely a problem, only a nuisance
6. That proves that Word is OK, it is some third party add-in problem (see
below)

You don't say which OS you are using which may help, but I guess as this is
a recent purchase that it is Vista. One common incompatibility is the
Windows Live Office Add-in which is incompatible with Office 2000: if you
have that, remove it. Otherwise, see the following FAQ for further help
diagnosing the problem:
