word 2000 opens very slowly

but only when I open it by clicking on a word document. If I open Word first
and select File > open, all the documents I select open immediately.
However, If rather than starting with Word itself, I start with the document
itself and select 'open' or 'open with', it take about a minute for Word and
the document to open (Wordpad and Notepad with open immediately). I've tried
some of the fixes for a slow opening Word, but none of them have made any
difference in solving this disparity. Any ideas would be appreciated.

It's a long shot but do you run Outlook?

I once encountered a similar problem -though it was years ago with Office
97 - the user had the Journal on in Outlook and the file was simply getting
bigger and bigger.

You might want to check Outlook:
Tools > Options > Preferences > Journal Options

If that is the problem, uncheck the relevant boxes and then delete all the
entries by going to the Journal in View > Navigation Pane, highlight them
all and Delete.
